The use of mobile social media to carry out education for the elderly can effectively alleviate the imbalance between the increasing learning needs of the elderly and the shortage of school resources for the elderly, and help promote the large-scale and balanced development of education for the elderly. This paper takes the elder college learners as the research object to investigate the learning adaptability of the elderly using a mobile social media for learning. This paper adopts the mixed research method of interpretive explanatory sequence, collects and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data from five dimensions of learning status, learning content, learning activities, learning motivation and attitude, and learning barriers. The research shows that the elderly population can be divided into fully autonomous individuals and non-fully autonomous individuals, all of whom have a certain degree of mobile learning adaptability. They prefer health-based, personal interest-related, and video-based learning content. The learning activities are mainly at the lower-order cognitive level, and lack of higher-order cognitive activities. They pay more attention to the interactive social features of mobile social media and the content related to their own interests, and have a positive but cautious attitude towards using social media for learning. In the end, this paper puts forward some strategies to improve the learning adaptability of the elderly, such as selecting familiar learning tools, developing fragmented content, developing higher-order cognitive learning activities, and providing high-quality learning support services. This paper provides data support and strategic references for researchers, administrators and teachers in the field of geriatric education.
