Online education has the potential to narrow the gap in education and promote education equity with the advantages of low cost, wide coverage and less time and space limit, but most current empirical studies fail to support this point. In order to further enrich the research in this field, this paper explores the differences of different social groups in online public elective courses. The study finds that social superiority groups, such as boys, Han students, urban students, and fathers with higher academic degrees, are more likely to participate in online public elective courses. And self-perceived benefit of Han students and urban students is higher than that of minority students and rural students. In addition, compared with girls, boys are more likely to consider seeking challenges and fun as the main motivation for taking part in online public elective courses; Han students are more likely to consider having fun as the main learning motivation than minority students. This shows that online public elective courses, a commonly used form of online education in colleges and universities, does expose more students to rich educational resources, but it does not benefit different social classes, especially those disadvantaged student groups.
