Traditional LMS focuses on content management, but ignores learning itself. The emergence and development of the next-generation LMS (NGLMS) is promoted by the development of educational theory as well as the innovation of digital technology. NGLMS, also called next-generation digital learning environment (NGDLE), refers to the flexible learning space that supports personalization, meets the standard of universal design, and plays a bigger role in formative learning assessment. The NGLMS mainly has five key elements: interoperability and integration, personalization, analytics, advising and learning assessment, collaboration, accessibility and universal design. This system also makes progress in standard formulation, component development and practical exploration. The NGLMS enables learners to mold and customize learning environment, which supports their requirements and objectives. However, this system still encounters some challenges, such as realizing both personalization and consistency at the same time, updating related policies and management methods, promoting students' digital literacy, exploring the new forms of cooperation.
